My name is Lesha. I started out as a documentary photographer in 2019. But the endless stream of images made me shudder and I expanded the scope of my artistic exploration through experiments with the material, temporal, and “documentary” properties of photography.
Creativity fuels my curiosity, equipping me with instruments to study and interpret various cultural and social phenomena. My work revolves around processes connected to my own life. Simply put, I try to understand how three layers of subjectivity coexist within me — that of a man, a Sakha person, and a “citizen of modernity” — and to navigate the conflicts of values that emerge at the intersections of these roles. Alongside this, I carefully reflect on colonialism and decoloniality, crises of self-identity, and the relationships between human and non-human agents.
For the past years, I have felt a persistent crisis of meaning, yet I continue striving to recalibrate my own voice.
I like to wear camouflage pants, but I can’t shoot. I hope that I never have to learn it.
Now in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
